Requirements
- A Mac with Apple silicon (M1 or later). Intel Macs aren't supported.
- macOS 14 Sonoma or later.
- About 1 GB of free disk space for the app and the default speech model, plus room for any extra models.
- Internet for the one-time model download. Dictation works offline afterwards.
Install
- Open the downloaded
Sayburst.dmg. - Drag Sayburst into the Applications folder.
- Open Sayburst from Applications. macOS confirms it was downloaded from the internet and checked by Apple — click Open.
- Follow setup: allow the microphone and Accessibility, download a model, and try a dictation. It takes about two minutes.
Sayburst then lives in the menu bar. Hold fn in any text field to dictate.
Verify the download
The SHA-256 checksum of Sayburst-1.0.0.dmg is:

In Terminal: shasum -a 256 ~/Downloads/Sayburst-1.0.0.dmg. You can also check the signature with spctl -a -vv /Applications/Sayburst.app, which should report “source=Notarized Developer ID”.
Updates
Sayburst checks for updates once a day and asks before installing. Updates are signed; Sayburst refuses an update whose signature doesn't match. See the changelog.
Uninstall
Quit Sayburst from the menu bar and move it to the Trash. To remove models and history too, delete ~/Library/Application Support/Sayburst. If you bought a license, deactivate this Mac first in Settings › License so its spot is free.
